The Department of Statistics and Operations Research was established since the inception of the University in 1981. Statistics programme was under the Department of Mathematics and Statistics in the School of Science while the Operations Research Programme was placed under the Department of Operational Research and Planning in the School of Management. In 1984, the University was merged with University of Maiduguri. However, even with the merger, the status quo remained. On January 1, 1988, however, the University was demerged and the School of Management was relocated to University of Maiduguri. Inspite of this, Operations Research Programme was retained and merged with Department of Mathematics and Statistics and thus came to be known and called Mathematics, Statistics and Operations Research. On September 1, 1998, Department of Statistics and Operations Research was carved out of Mathematics, Statistics and Operations Research and till today maintains the name.
